4. Idioms in song
Ok this is an example of idioms. Idiom in song “my way” recorded by Frank Sinatra This is the famous song.
We have some examples of idioms in this song
They’re in the lyrics you’ll see some in italics and in bold so bold italics
If you look at the right hand side in the lower right corner
You’ll see definition of each idiom used in this song.
The first one final curtain this is death
The final curtain is a reference to curtain when their performance is over and
The final curtain the last curtain comes down.
That means the evening is over. That means the audience is leaving and actors works is done meaning “death”
Next one “State my case” this is to say what you think or say what I think
Let me state my case. This is a reference to the court room, meaning a court of law
The lawyer will state his case.
Next one down at the bottom left hand final paragraph says
Bit of more than I could chew
I bit off more than I could chew. This means to put oneself in a difficult situation
It can also mean taking on too much work, for example if you have a large project to do and you think you can do it all by yourself but you can’t. You’ve bitten off more than you can chew or you’ve put yourself in a situation where for which you aren’t ready. That’s not a good place to be.
The next one is “stand tall” and I stood tall.
Stood ( or stand) tall is to be strong, you have to be strong in life, standing stall is to be strong and this is the message of this song
First paragraph says
Had my fill
Had my fill means to do something until you are satisfied this is a reference to eating, eat until you are full, to have my fill. To do it until satisfied.
Ok those are the example of idioms in this song.
My way ( recorded by Frank Sinatra)
Let’s listen!
My way
And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this.
I did it my way
Regrets I’ve had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course
Each careful step[ along the byway
And more much more than this
I did it my way
Yes, there were times I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way
I’ve loved , I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my share of losing
And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no ho no not me
I did it my way
For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way
Yes it was my way
6. Idioms in song

l Metaphor is saying one thing is another, if I said that man is a monster. That man is a monster of cause he is not a really monster the quality of monster but you can think about the person, that is for example for metaphor say one thing is one thing. Let’s not really a monster but the qualities of a monster.
l Simile like a word similar ,is very closely related to metaphor. Love is like a rose. The trick to remember means that simile uses the word “like” or the word ‘as” Tom Hank said “life is like a box of chocolates” you never quite know what are you going to get. so those are sample of something is simile
l Perspective what is the perspective I you (he she, it) telling the story also we have two other objective, and subject means that the speaker tell us how he fell about talk what speaker what feel
