Next you will be able to identify specific basic English elements such as idioms, metaphor, simile and symbolism. We would be covering this for expecting English writing and modify our coming classes. Next, you will be familiar with numerous record artists from different genres. We will take little bit about different aspects and different genres. Genre is a type of music. For example, rock music is a genre, jazz music is a genre and country music is genre. A genre has unique characters that are able to be identified. When we hear the country song we usual know that country song right away because the songs have characters and identify the genres.

Song writing is indeed a form and the best song of having found chosen lyrics put together in a genius way or the way that touch the people. That why is the best long song and popular around the world. We get understanding of useful language song writing but also look at song put together in different ways that sound right a symbol of idea and to a song.

For example, Song of 1960 might reflect the entire environment in Unite State or might reflect the symbol of right movement that was going on in United State and disco music was a product of 1970. We will look at the America culture and history and hopefully find interesting new ideas and give new perspective what culture is in history.

1.4      Language usage: the songwriter’s tool

First lyrics: Lyrics are simply the words of a song

The best songs often have very carefully chosen lyrics.

The lyrics are arranged in a way best convey the meaning of the song

A person who writes lyrics is called a “lyricist”

Put in together song. Writing song is a related system that one does not have been a musician. Some of the best lyrics were not musician. However, certain artists choose writer both lyrics and music and do quiet well.

1.5      Songwriting tool # 1 Rhyme

First, rhymes are simply correspondence in final sounds of words. For example, the word: tall, fail, mall, shawl, and all. These words are rhyme. They have the all same sound at the end and they are beginning at different consonants and different sounds. Another example: red, said, bed, head, dread. These words are rhyme but more rhymes start looking at music later in the class. Lyrics system often chose a line word. Line by line or every other line skipping a line so we have four lines music. The first line with the third line and the second line could be the four line.

That one is example. There are many, many different ways to rhyme and lyrics. Here is some rhyming examples in two lines.

Don’t do the crime

I you don’t do the tune

Here is another example.

When you’re weary, feeling small

When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all

Notice that these examples. The second line is little bit longer than the first line. But the rhyme is an idea so forth line together and final example.

Well, my heart went ‘boom

When I crossed that’ room

In this case the lines are almost identical and the boom sounds to rhyme to wirte. O.K. This is rhyme and you see many of song you look at. Usual rhyme lyrics I should mention. However, that all song do use rhyme lyrics. Some very good songs have no rhyme at all. Some musicians choose to set point to music and all points to the writer.

1.7    All my loving (the Beatles)

This page we have is “All my loving by the Beatles”

You notice the right way in many of words in the page is in color. The words image color in another line. For example, the first line the word “kiss” rhyme” miss” in the second line.” Before we talk more about the running structure in “All my loving” let us listen to it.

Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you.

Tomorrow I’ll miss you.

Remember I’ll always be true.

And then while I’m away.

I’ll write home every day.

And I’ll send all my loving to you.

I’ll pretend that I’m kissing

The lips I am missing

And hope that my dreams will come true.

And then while I’m away

I’ll write home every day

And I’ll send all my loving to you.

All my loving I will send to you

All my loving, darling I’ll be true

All right, that is all my loving is a classic Beatles song. So we have an interesting line to here. Look the rhyme part here.

Look at the first voice of the song which is the first, second rhyme. We see that first two lines have a rhyme words ’kiss you’ and ‘miss you’. But the third line, the fouth line instead the final line of the verse and get the final line of the verse. The line, remember I’ll always be true and send all my loving to you. In between the blue rhyme words we have a pair of green words, --a green away and day. So we have an interesting structure here----to rhyme line from the verse and individual to verse This is an interesting song

1.8     Songwriting tool#2 simile

Simile: is saying one thing is “like” or “as” another unrelated thing. So we see a picture: the heart of Cupid and picture of two roses. If you say “Love is like a rose” That is an example of simile. What is doing is giving a quality of roses. A rose is a beautiful flower, a beautiful loving snare but also a song can hot you. So you say “Love is like a rose”. You give a quality of the character of a role to love and your simile this way can express the meaning by associating two objects: rose and love.

1.9      Songwriters use metaphor

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which an implicit comparison is made between two unlike things. So we take a look at a picture here. We have a large knife: a type of knife is called “digger.” and on the right we have a picture “rain” falling to the ground. Here is an example: metaphor. “Daggers of rain fell from the sky.”

1.10               Why do writers use metaphors?

Metaphors can create powerful meaning and imagery for a reader or listener. “Daggers (knife) of rain.” for example, Suggest an unpleasant, even harmful rainfall. Certainly, no one would want to be caught out in such a rain. Digger is rain.

1.11               Songwriting tool # 4:  Symbol

A symbol represents an abstract idea or concept---it is anything that stands for something beyond itself. Foe example, the white dove is generally considered to represent or symbolize Peace.

We look at the drawing here by a Pablo Pcasso. A drawing of dove hold out of the branch and out of branches is a symbol of extending peaceful sentiment. So the dove carrying a branch is a symbol of peace. Peace is an abstract concept. An abstract means idea. Something we can physical put hang on it but something we can think about and hope for peace.

1.12               Songwriting tool # 5 English language idioms

Learning idioms can really help person understand a new language better.

Idiom is defined as an expression that does not mean what it literally says. Is meaning is often quite different from the word-for-word translation.

Many idioms may cross language barriers, but others are language specific, i.e. they will not translate well from the first language.

Here is example: The phrase’ as the crow flies” is an English language idiom to describe the shortest possible distance between two locations.

The crow is a bird, common bird, in the United State. A black bird that is common across the country and phrase “As the crow flies” means straight line. So we ask someone whether he leaves when they say” the house is three kilometers away: as the crow flies” That means the straight line. That is example of idiom. We look more idioms later.

1.13               Slide 12 Songwriting tool # 6 use of perspective

Perspective is the point of view of the speaker.

What is the mean when you listen to a song. Ask yourself who is the person’s song, talking to or talking about. For example, “I just called to say: I love you” –Setvei Wonder. That is the first person. For perspective, if you speak you use the word ‘I”. “ I just called to say: I love you”—Stevei Wonder. That is the first person for the speaker use the word ‘I’. Second person speaker use ’you’ to someone. For example, “You can’t always get what you want” That is a famous song by the English record band—Rolling Stone song“You can’t always get what you want.” In this case, the speaker use the word ‘you’. Who is talking “You don’t always get what you want” talking to a specific person or to a universal you. That is, the second example for second person perspective.

Finally, third person as the sense of speaker tell a story, speaker use “he, she, or it’ to relate the story. For example, “The devil went down to Georgia. He was looking for a soul to steal.” ---song by Charlie Daniels. That song is written in 1980. In this case the speaker is telling the story-“The devil went down to Geogria, he was lookin’ for a soul to steal. He does not say the word ’I’ or the word ’you’ instead he tell you the detail what has happened.

1.14               Perspective and emotion.

If the speaker includes his own emotions and reactions to a sense, story, or song we call the perspective “subjective”

If the speaker does not include his own emotion but only relays facts. We call the perspective “objective”

A good writer can use perspective to his advantage to best describe a scene or situation. For example, describing a tragic or sad situation with an objective perspective may actually be more effective than the subjective perspective.

1.15               Perspective-objective voice

Objective means no emotions with we can find from the speaker. Here is an extra song. “The wreck of the Edmmd Fiegeyald. This song tells the story of the sinking of a ship and the loss of her crew in the objective voice, i.e. with no emotions. You see the picture: a ship in trouble in a great lake. Apparently, I think it met middle in  United State.
