空大英語社英語研習材料 類別:故事-歌曲A Thousand Winds (化成千風)

I would like to tell you a storyTwenty-five years ago, I went to Manila, the Philippines, for a short visit. On a Sunday morning, I went into a big church and sat down on a bench waiting for the church service to begin. A nice-looking young lady came to sit next to me. Her name was Evita. With a sweet smile, she asked me where I came from.  She kindly helped me understand the church service. After the church service, Evita showed me around the city. We became friends.

For two years, she wrote me many letters to encourage me to learn more English.  I also wrote her letters. Thus my English was much improved. Then Evita went to work as a nurse in Saipan. Three months later, she married a doctor who worked at the same hospital. Unfortunately, six months later, they got divorced because Evita got breast cancer and had to get back to Manila for medical treatment.

After three months’ treatment in the hospital, Evita's health became worse. There was no hope of cure. She had to leave from the hospital and go back to her home village to wait to die. I went to visit her. She was very weak and skinny. She lost all her hair, and her breasts had been cut off. Grasping my hands, she calmly said to me, "William, thank you for coming all the way to my home village to see me. Please don't feel sad for me. Although my body is in great pain, I am not afraid of dying. Because of my faith, I know I will go to heaven. In there, I will pray for you. God be with you! Take good care of yourself and have a joyful life!" Three weeks after I left, she passed away.

The next year, I went again to her home village. Standing at her grave, I could see the blue sky with white clouds, birds flying over the tree tops, and I could feel winds blowing......Suddenly, deep in my heart, I heard of a voice, an angel’s voice, singing…..

Please do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am the sunlight on the ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.

I am a thousand winds. I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow. I am a thousand winds that blow.

* * *

Please do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there; I did not die.

I am the swift rush of birds in flight. I am soft stars that shine at night.

I am a thousand winds. I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow. I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glint on snow. I am a thousand winds that blow.
